Holy Tuesday

Let’s Read!

Today we pick up after Jesus had his triumphant entry to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. You can read the whole passage in your Bible: John 12: 20-36.

Some Greeks wanted to see Jesus for themselves. They had travelled a long way to hear him as Jesus and his teaching was now well-known far and wide. When these strangers gathered before him, Jesus began to speak of his death,

Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.” John 12: 24-26 (NIV).

Let’s Think!

Jesus tries to explain a very difficult idea using a very simple image that everyone can understand. A grain has to fall to the ground in order to produce fruit. Jesus is telling us that in order to spread his love for us, he must die, like the grain. If Jesus is the grain, what do you think the fruit represents? I think, in his death Jesus promises three things: he will take away the sins of the world, he will draw more followers to him, and grant those that follow him eternal life. What are your thoughts?

Let’s Talk!

If we look at this passage closely, perhaps Jesus is saying that life might not always be as we expected or as we want it. We will, however, be rewarded with eternal life in Heaven, if we follow his teachings.

As followers of Jesus, how can we spread the news so that more will come to know Jesus and have faith in him? Discuss with your family what it means to be a modern-day disciple.

Let’s do!

You will need: A container, soil, a fruit or vegetable with seeds.

Collect the pips or seeds from any fruit or vegetables you have in the house (apples, peppers, oranges etc). Fill a container with some soil from the garden. Plant your seeds in the soil and see if you can get them to grow. As you water them and keep them in the sunlight, think of the way Jesus nurtures us to help us grow.

Let’s pray!

Dear Lord,

We thank you that Jesus was willing to die for our sins so that we may have eternal life. Thank you for sending your son Jesus to be the light of the world. We ask you, Lord, to guide us with your light and love today.

Through Jesus Christ Our Lord, Amen.
