Holy Wednesday

Let’s Read!

Today is the Last Supper, where Jesus introduces us to communion as we understand it today. At the table, Jesus also predicts that one of his disciples is going to betray him. You can read the whole passage in your Bible: John 21- 30 (NIV).

Jesus is spending the evening with his close friends as he gets closer to the events of Easter. Jesus already knows all the steps that must happen in the lead up to his crucifixion and is aware that among his closest friends there is one who will betray him with actions that lead to his arrest and death. Do you remember Judas, the greedy thief, from earlier in the week? Here, we meet him again as Jesus predicts it will be him,

‘It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish’. Then, dipping the piece of bread, gave it to Judas…as soon as Judas took the bread, Satan had entered into him.’ John 13: 26-27 (NIV)

Judas then left the table immediately.

Let’s Think!

Jesus was having dinner with his closest friends, the disciples. When you are with your friends how do you feel? When you think of Jesus with his friends, what comes to mind? How do you think Jesus is feeling knowing that he cannot trust one of his friends? How do you think Jesus feels about Judas?

Let’s Talk!

Each share a time in which a person let you down. How did it make you feel? Talk about why that person might have behaved that way and think about how you can forgive them. Perhaps you could even come up with a plan of how you could do something nice for that person.

 Let’s Do!

You will need: a pen, some card, and some good hiding spots.

Did you know Holy Wednesday is also called Spy Wednesday?

Why not write some secret messages of hope and encouragement on separate pieces of card. Hide them around the house so that family members can stumble across them unexpectedly. You could tuck one into a book, bury one in the sock drawer, plant one in a coffee cup etc … They might be found today, they might be found next week, next month or even next year depending on how well you have hidden them. Put the date on it as a reminder it is from Holy Wednesday 2020 but remember – do not put your name on it or it will blow your cover!

Let’s Pray!

Dear Lord,

Thank you for forgiving our sins and for loving us even if we make mistakes. Help us to show the same forgiveness and understanding when others make mistakes, even if we have been hurt or saddened.

Through Jesus Christ Our Lord, Amen.
