The problem of microplastic
We all know that plastic takes a long time to degrade, but when it does, it turns into ‘microplastic’ – tiny particles from a few millimetres down to the something the size of bacteria. All living creatures now have microplastic in the bloodstream and body tissues and it is even found in the placenta of pregnant women. We are not sure what the long term health implications might be.
Obviously, massively reducing our use of plastic is the longer term solution, but to avoid adding more microplastic to our systems, we are advised especially to avoid plastic water bottles and cooking our food in plastic (in the microwave for example). Yes, ready meals are very convenient, but many traditionally cooked meals can also be quickly prepared, healthier, cheaper and avoid adding microplastic to our system.
We are reminded in Romans not to ‘conform to the pattern of this world’, but to be ‘transformed by the renewing of our minds’ (Romans 12: 2). Consider spending time asking God how you might respond to this call when it comes to your own use of plastic.
