Eco tip for the first week in January
January food store audit
I think I offered this tip last January too – but it’s worth repeating. UK households throw away approximately 6.4 to 6.7 million tonnes of food annually, accounting for roughly 60%-70% of the total food waste generated in the country. This equates to nearly one-third of all food purchased being wasted. Roughly 70% of this household waste is considered edible, costing the average household £470 per year. That’s shocking, isn’t it?
Now is the time to go through your fridge and look at what needs eating up, before it goes to waste, Remember that a ‘best before’ date simply tells you exactly that – it can still be safely eaten after that date, as long as it’s not looking mouldy or smelling off; whereas a ‘use by’ date means what it says – it should be used by that date.
January is also a great time to go through your pantry/store cupboard and freezer (if you have one) and seek to use up as much as possible before it’s past its best. Remember that all food is ultimately a gift from God and to be treasured.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
