Stay Cool the Natural Way

These recent summer heatwaves can put extra pressure on both our health and the energy grid. Keep your home naturally cooler by closing curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day to block out the sun, but open windows in the evening and the early morning to let cooler air circulate. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and seek shade when outdoors. Wearing lightweight, light-coloured clothing can also help you stay comfortable while reducing the need for energy-intensive cooling.

For very hot nights, here’s my daughter’s top tip from the time she lived in Portugal: during the day fold up a light sheet and put it in the freezer. At bedtime, use it as a cooling cover while you settle down.

In June we saw record breaking temperatures reported which are a result of climate change. We need to take action NOW to try and prevent climate catastrophe. Every little action makes a difference. We can also pray:

God of hope, bless all people and embrace us with your abundant grace for working together in the journey to heal the earth. We pray for your wisdom, sympathy and creativity to take meaningful actions with a shared vision for the common good of all creation. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
